In this Agrodok Peter Oei shows how mushroom cultivation fits in very well with sustainable farming because it uses waste products like straw and wood chips, for example, and gives a high return per surface area. The author deals with three kinds of mushroom – oyster, shiitake and wood ear mushrooms which are easy to grow on a small-scale.
Site of the mushroom farm
Farmers must keep certain factors in mind when selecting a site for their mushroom farm: distance from market, availability of good substrate material, transport and the availability of clean water.
Particular attention is given to the production of mushroom “seed” or spawn. The author sees the availability of spawn as a problem in many countries. It might be necessary for mushroom growers to produce their own spawn. This is not a simple process and in the well illustrated chapter Spawn production a detailed description is given of the process of developing spawn.
