Donkeys are indigenous to the North-eastern parts of Africa. However, their use on the continent as a whole is limited. Still donkeys can play a major role in rural development in Africa and other parts of the world, as they are cheap, easy to handle, even for children, and adapted to rather harsh climates.
The booklet gives an elaborated overview of characteristics and use of donkeys, the care and feeding they need, and how to use them as work animal. Donkeys can be employed as pack animals or as draught animals, to transport loads or to work the land, ploughing, harrowing or weeding. Every type of use of donkeys requires another type of harnessing, and different styles of training.
In the booklet one will find detailed teaching of these aspects of keeping donkeys as work animals. Drawings and photographs make the text clearer. The booklet finally gives titles for further reading, a list of useful addresses, and a glossary with technical terms
